Barlia robertiana

Gouache on 35.5 x 51 cm 100% cotton rag

This Mediterranean species truly deserves its name putting up a spike of greeny-purple flowers up to a metre high in the early spring. This was an attempt at traditional botanical illustration and ended up as a lesson in cell biology. I particularly like the rhubarb red stem and the way it turned out in general.
